GAMING APPLICATION :
Thanx Blah Blah Blah for you help in this section. Appreciate it smile.gif

Primary aim :

~ Able to play the latest game as smooth as possible.
~ Focus a lot on graphic and sound quality
~ Focus more on single core CPU performance
~ Also focus on RAM overclocking in higher end package.
~ Less focus on storage devices.
~ All packages can run general applications without any problems.

Packages:

from CHEAP -----> EXPENSIVE:

--------- increased in CPU o/c speed ------------------>
--------- increased in RAM o/c speed ------------------>
--------- increased in graphic quality & speed --------->

CONTENT CREATION / VIDEO EDITING :

Basically, content creation and video editing have some same features. So I group these two together.

Please take note that, video editing is different from video encoding. Edit means u r doing something randomly to the video to modify its content, and encoding actually means converting from one format to another one.

Content Creation includes web design, 2D graphic design, 3D rendering and of course the engineering model rendering which is in 3D too

Primary aim :

~ High requirement on CPU, needs good single thread and multithread ability.
~ Big and fast RAM is another important criteria.
~ Low end 3D card is more than enough as application requires only 2D display.
~ 3D rendering uses CPU rather than GPU, so high end 3D card is not essential.
~ Big HDD capacity and advanced optical storage are needed to store big files.
~ Must be rock stable during operation.

Packages:

from CHEAP -----> EXPENSIVE:

----- increased in CPU o/c speed ---------->
----- increased in RAM o/c speed ---------->
----- increased in RAM capacity ------------>
----- increased in storage space ----------->

Hey, i found X700Pro is generally better than GF6600, maybe we screw the 6600 and replace with X700Pro? It's just 50 bucks difference.

edit : I'm changing some price range due to the suggestion in LYN. It's more reasonable to hv closer price range in lower end specification biggrin.gif

* Updated with Gaming Rig listing.
*

Well, I think its better to go with 6600 because you can now SLI with 6600 and 6200. Moreover, it supports SM3.0 (for HDR) and overclocks pretty well. Forceware 80 looks pretty good and should give the 6600 a good improvement over the x700 in most recent games.

On the other hand, the X700 doesn't support SM3.0 and no support for CrossFire (officially). x700 is actually a "not-so-successful" product from ATI. Either go for 6600 or 6200 for low end graphics.
pcmoddingmy
Actually you can enable SM3.0 without using HDR. So basically SM3.0 improves performance a little bit, but don't use HDR on low end graphics card such as 6200.

haha, saw this one some time ago, crazy sial Pc's
pcmoddingmy
Not that crazy sial actually... notice the power supply isnt connected to the system yet... how to boot up? tongue.gif

And having SLI on Intel platform rather than AMD platform is ridiculous.
I also think that a gaming rig should at least have a Thermalright XP based heatsink or a water cooling...

Edit: I also noticed that the mobo isn't actually screwed to the casing!

"Ultimate PC Game Gear Guide!"!

Processor
Pentium 4 Processor Extreme Edition supporting Hyper-Threading Technology LGA775 3.73GHz 1066FSB L2=2MB 90nm - with a super fast core, 2MB of L2 cache, and support for Hyperthreading this thing really rocks!

AMD Athlon 64 X2 (2.8GHz) L1=128KB L2=1MB 90nm Retail - In a class by itself, designed specifically for gaming

Motherboard Chipset
QUOTE
For power gamer, the Intel 945P chipset is still a great choice. While being a bit more friendly to the wallet, motherboards based on this chipset still include great features like Dual-Core 533MHz - 1066MHz FSB CPU support, Hyper-Threading, Dual-channel DDR2 support, PCI-Express x16 interface, Intel HD Audio, improved Matrix Storage Technology, and SATA 3G support. You don't get SLI support with this chipset, but for the gamer who wants to play, but doesn't want to go broke doing it, this isn't the most important feature anyways.

QUOTE
On the High end of the chipset spectrum is the NVIDIA nForce4 SLI chipset, (which can be used on the Intel or AMD platform motherboards), and the Intel 955X chipset. The NVIDIA nForce4 SLI now comes in two flavors, the standard SLI and the SLI X16 which, at introduction, was strictly a Dell only option, but is now making it's way to other motherboard makers. The X16 option offers two X16 lanes for the SLI video cards which gives you full blown SLI support, which is something that hasn't been available. With many SLI capable setups currently available, you are only actually getting X16 speeds if you use a single card, it gets cut in half if you're running SLI. While X8 PCI-E is still pretty sweet, true X16 bandwidth on both cards will be a welcome sight.

Graphic Card
XFX GeForce 7800GTX Overclocked 490MHz 256MB Dual DVI VIVO PCI-Express DDR3 SLI mode.

Sound Card
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Gamer Limited Edition SB0350G Retail (includes full versions of several popular games)

QUOTE
For the gamer who wants to save a few bucks, but still get some of the best possible audio available, it's possible to kill two birds with one stone. For the customer who purchases one of the motherboards with Intel's 955X or 945P motherboards, they may include the new and improved Intel® High Definition Audio (Intel® HD Audio) Version 2. Intel's built-in audio chip supports up to eight channels at 192 kHz/32-bit quality and is able to support all the Dolby technologies, including the latest Dolby Pro Logic* IIx, which makes it possible to enjoy older stereo content in 7.1 channel surround sound. Intel® HD Audio also enables high quality speech recognition and Voice Over IP for those who use their PC's for more than just music and gaming functions.

Memory
1GB Corsair XMS2 1000MHz DDR2 (2x512MB) (TWIN2X1024-8000UL)

QUOTE
For gaming performance to be realized a minimum 1GB total memory running in dual channel mode is required (this means two 512MB matching memory modules). 2GB would be ideal for intensive gaming purposes.

Hard Drives
Western Digital SATA 74GB 10,000RPM 8MB Cache 4.5ms

LCD Monitor
ViewSonic 19" VX924 LCD
QUOTE
The industry leading 3ms response rate can't be beat. The display features a 1280x1024 SXGA anti-glare screen with a 550:1 contrast ratio. High brightness and contrast ratios, wide viewing angles, and proprietary ViewSonic specialties like Dynamic Structure and Amplified Impulse technologies make this a serious gamers monitor.

Speaker

Nice info sphenix.

Hmm... it's weird that they use Pentium D EE as ultimate rig, as it is so hot and don't perform well in gaming. HT isn't needed in gaming at all. A single core with high clock like A64FX is the best match.

QUOTE

^ this statement is wrong, A64x2 is not built for gaming. In fact, AMD processors are not built with gaming as the target, but in the overall aspects. It is just so co-incidence that AMD performs great in gaming compare to Intel.

This is kinda stupid IMHO, since it is the ULTIMATE rig, who cares about being friendly to the wallet? Mobo is one of the most important parts in PC, js go full out with the money tongue.gif

This version is better over all performance compare the AMD version smile.gif , but the gaming is lower compare the AMD version, even the GPU is overclocked sad.gif , because AMD version use higher class 8800GTX, and INTEL version use lower class 8800GTS.

Overview of 8800GTX/GTS, X1950XTX and 7900GTX click here.

For RM300, its quite hard to find a new s478 processor.
You can try looking at 2nd hand stores and you may find a 2.4GHz or up to 3.0GHz proc for that price. My best bet is to go with a 2.4C wink.gif

Update(13/08/2006) at post #17! laugh.gif I 'squess' Intel Core 2 Duo on some rig, and make two version of "THE ULTIMATE", "INTEL" & "AMD" version. cool.gif
Blah Blah Blah
Update(20/08/2006) at post #17, I make two version of 'THE ULTIMATE - AMD VERSION' 1 & 2, cause I still can't decide go with S939 or AM2 sad.gif , so I make two to let you guys chose...

1. S939 had Opteron, so is very easy to overclock, but very expensive and old technology, and hard to find...

2. AM2 still don't have the Opteron yet, which mean hard to overclock, but using latest technology and very cheap, but I'm watting the 65nm AM2 or the Opteron AM2.

even though the X1600XT outperforms the 6600GT in 3dmark05, the real-game performance for it is just about the same as the 6600GT.

It's only in a game like Half-life 2 that you'll see the X1600XT's dominance over the 6600GT. In games like Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Call of Duty 2, Doom 3, etc, you'll find that the X1600XT performs at the same level as the 6600GT.

I can understand that the 7300GT DDR3 is a cheap card, but to call it entry-level is insulting. I score about 4551 in 3dmark05, and the real-game performance is about as much as a standard 6800GT.

Update(27/08/2006), this time, I REALLY remove AMD S939 from my guide, hope you guys not sad/mad... sleep.gif Bacause is really hard to find the AMD Opteron S939 and high performance 'DDR1', but I know View Net from Low Yat Plaza still have some stock of AMD Opteron S939 if you want, so I will keep 'My' last AMD S939 Gaming Rig from here:

AMD Opteron 170 (2.0GHz, Dual Core, 2x 1MB L2, S939) - 1540
Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe (nForce4 SLI X16) - 850
Corsair TwinX 1024-3200C2PT (2x DDR400 1GB) - 800
2x Galaxy 7900GT 512MB 1.4ns GDDR3 Overclockded (24PL) @ SLI - 3360
Creative S-Blaster X-Fi Fatality - 950
2x 36.0GB Western Digital Raptor SATA 10K rpm 8MB @ RAID 0 - 770
320.0GB Seagate Baracudda SATA2 NCQ 16MB - 375
LiteOn 16x DVD Drive - 85
Pioneer 5xDR DVD-RW Drive (model name: 111) - 230
3.5" Floppy Disk Drive - 30
Antec True Power 2.0 550W (A-PFC) - 490
Thermalright XP-120 with 12cm case fan - 300
on board LAN - 0

Total: 9780

Thank you AMD S939 all this years. happy.gif

one thing for sure is... prices for all these stuff in malaysia is just extreme!

for that system you just listed, you can get it in the US for about $1400 (RM4760).

you could even build a system with a 7950GX2 and conroe E6300, along with 2 gigs of ram for only $1000 (RM3400) in the US.

In conclusion, prices in malaysia are just clean rip-offs.

Which online store you checked the price for??? ph34r.gif
getsu
blah blah blah: sure, it's expensive, but not as expensive as RM4500 for the same specs in malaysia.

Fabian: check newegg.com, dabs.com, etc. They offer lower prices compared to stores here. I also got a catalog from the US before (from a friend), and the prices listed were all cheaper.
pcmoddingmy
Well, one thing is cheaper in Malaysia for sure: Processors.
I'm getting my E6300 for RM650 only! tongue.gif

bah, the E6300 is one cheap processor, anywhere.

Really?
I thought it is being sold at above $200 in US? unsure.gif
getsu
it sells for a lower price on sites like newegg.com, about $149-179 or so. I heard from those living in the US that it was also around that price
pcmoddingmy
Just visited Newegg and they listed the E6300 for $193 (RM710), which is about the same price you can get in Malaysia. CZone sells the E6300 at RM720, but not sure if its bundle or CPU alone.
As for E6600, Newegg listed $369.99 (RM1,361.59). You can get it for just RM1210, but again... not sure if must bundle.
Last but not least, Newegg is crazy over their X6800 as they price it at $1,149.99 (RM4,232.27). You can get the same CPU at Czone for just RM3800 and save RM432.
getsu
mmm... looks like newegg has gone crazy. Looks like those other sites are gonna be more popular now.

me can buy @ staff price for $105 only.

Why don't you go to the retail shops and customize your own gaming PC?
You can always start with the available systems and upgreade RAM or graphics card which suits your budget.
I can suggest you the following:
Intel C2D E6600 2.4GHz (RM1200)
Gigabyte 965P-DS3 (RM550)
2x1GB DDR2-667 or DDR2-533 Value Ram (RM800)
NVIDIA GeForce 7900GS 256MB (RM800)
200GB SATA HDD (RM250)
DVDRW (RM130)
Case (RM100) or more...
PSU (RM200)

Total: ~RM3,900
